R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Melvin A. Arnold has reached a significant milestone
  in his extraordinary 60-year career in law enforcement with his
  retirement in 2008 as chief deputy sheriff of the Jim Wells County
  Sheriff Department in Alice; and
         WHEREAS, Born in 1927 in Lott, Mr. Arnold began his career as
  a peace officer in 1948 with the Robstown Police Department; he took
  time away from the department to serve his nation as a United States
  Marine, receiving his honorable discharge at the rank of sergeant
  in 1952; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Arnold returned to the Robstown PD following his
  military service, and, until he left the department in 1980, he
  distinguished himself in a number of positions, including traffic
  officer, patrol sergeant, assistant chief, and captain of
  detectives; he served twice as chief of the department; and
         WHEREAS, In 1981, Mr. Arnold went to work for the Jim Wells
  County Sheriff Department, where he served as chief deputy sheriff
  for nearly 30 years; although he has retired from that position, he
  continues to stand ready as a member of the department's reserve
  force, making him one of the oldest active peace officers in Texas;
  and
         WHEREAS, For more than six decades, Chief Deputy Arnold's
  dedication, professionalism, and commitment to the public safety
  have greatly benefited his fellow Texans, and he may indeed reflect
  with pride on a career well spent; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Melvin A. Arnold on his retirement
  as chief deputy sheriff and commend him for his continuing service
  to the Jim Wells County Sheriff Department; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Chief Deputy Arnold as an expression of high regard by
  the Texas House of Representatives.
