R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Matthew Thomas of Weatherford competed in the 2008
  National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C.; and
         WHEREAS, Sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the
  National Geographic Bee is a geography competition for students in
  grades four through eight from across the United States; every
  year, thousands of students participate in state bees, and the
  state winners advance to the national finals at National Geographic
  headquarters to compete for scholarships; and
         WHEREAS, After first becoming fascinated with geography as a
  kindergartner, Matthew Thomas won his first geography bee when he
  was a fourth grader at Mary Martin Elementary School in the
  Weatherford Independent School District; he won the school contest
  three years in a row, from 2006 to 2008, and all three years he went
  on to attend the state bee; in 2006, he was the only fourth grader in
  Texas to qualify for the state competition; and
         WHEREAS, The gifted Mr. Thomas won the state bee as a sixth
  grader in 2008 and advanced to the national bee in Washington, D.C.,
  in May, tying for 14th place against talented students from all 50
  states; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Thomas was the Mary Martin Elementary School
  Optimist Boy of the Year for 2007-2008; currently a student at Tison
  Middle School, he plays in the symphonic band and has made the UIL
  Region 7 Middle School Symphonic Band; and
         WHEREAS, Matthew Thomas is an exemplary young man whose
  unique skills in geography enabled him to display his talents on the
  national stage, and he is indeed worthy of special recognition;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Matthew Thomas on his
  participation in the National Geographic Bee in 2008 and extend to
  him sincere best wishes for continued success and a bright future;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Thomas as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
