R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Rachael Elizabeth Flatt became the 2008 World Junior |
|
Figure Skating Champion at the event held February 24 through March |
|
2 in Sofia, Bulgaria; and |
|
WHEREAS, Considered an underdog entering the World Juniors, |
|
Ms. Flatt captured the championship by taking first place in the |
|
free-skate competition while setting personal bests in the short, |
|
long, and overall programs; moreover, she was graded highly on her |
|
execution for nearly all elements of her routines, which |
|
contributed to her win; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Flatt was skating by the time she was four years |
|
old and won the U.S. National Novice title at age 12; she went on to |
|
claim a silver medal in the Junior Ladies division at the 2006 U.S. |
|
Figure Skating Championships, and in 2007 she won the Senior Ladies |
|
titles at both regional and sectional competitions; her |
|
international debut as a junior came in her victorious performance |
|
at the International Challenge Cup in March 2007; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in California, Ms. Flatt now resides in |
|
Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she trains with coaches Tom |
|
Zakrajsek and Becky Calvin; she is a junior at Cheyenne Mountain |
|
High School, where she maintains a straight-A average, and she |
|
plans to pursue a career in sports medicine; in her spare time, she |
|
enjoys tennis, surfing, skiing, playing piano, and spending time |
|
with her dogs, Lucy and Ethel; and |
|
WHEREAS, The outstanding accomplishments of this highly |
|
skilled athlete are a testament to her hard work and competitive |
|
drive, and these attributes will continue to serve her well in all |
|
of her future endeavors; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Rachael Elizabeth Flatt on winning |
|
the 2008 World Junior Figure Skating Championship and extend to her |
|
best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Ms. Flatt as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
