R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, With the passing of Dr. Sophie Thompson Womack on
  February 17, 2008, the citizens of Detroit, Michigan, and San
  Antonio, Texas, lost a gifted and caring professional, and we join
  her family and friends in mourning their loss; and
         WHEREAS, A graduate of Howard University, Sophie Womack
  earned her master's degree from the University of Tennessee at
  Knoxville and went on to attend Meharry Medical College; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Womack broke new ground for both African
  Americans and women throughout her notable career in medicine; the
  first African American elected president of the Wayne County
  Medical Society of Michigan, she was also the first African
  American and first woman to become president of the medical staff at
  Detroit Medical Center; and
         WHEREAS, This distinguished neonatologist served as a
  division chief at Sinai-Grace Hospital and as vice president of
  medical affairs at Harper University Hospital and Hutzel Women's
  Hospital; moreover, she gave back to her community through her
  establishment with her husband, Dr. Jimmy Womack, of the
  Coalition-Circle of Hope, an organization dedicated to children's
  health and wellness; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to enjoying the special bond she shared
  with her husband, Dr. Womack also found great joy in her
  relationship with her daughters, Ashley and Brandi; and
         WHEREAS, Although "Dr. Sophie" will be greatly missed, she
  leaves behind a legacy that will forever serve to inspire the
  countless people whose lives she touched during her time on this
  earth; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Sophie Thompson
  Womack and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her family: to
  her husband, Dr. Jimmy Womack; to her daughters, Ashley and Brandi
  Womack; to her mother, Irene Thompson; to her sisters, Laura and
  Carolyn Thompson, Irene Jones, and Juanita Turner; to her brother,
  Clarence Thompson; and to her other relatives and many friends;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Sophie
  Thompson Womack.
