R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is pleased to |
|
join the citizens of Waller County in celebrating February 10, |
|
2009, as Waller County Day at the State Capitol; and |
|
WHEREAS, Created by the Texas Legislature in 1873 from |
|
sections of Austin and Grimes Counties, Waller County is named for |
|
Edwin Waller, a signatory of the Texas Declaration of Independence |
|
and the City of Austin's first mayor; and |
|
WHEREAS, Waller County's early settlers were members of |
|
Stephen F. Austin's original Texas colony; the county played a role |
|
in the Texas Revolution, serving as the site of an encampment for |
|
the army of General Sam Houston; and |
|
WHEREAS, Before the discovery of oil in the 1930s, the |
|
economy of Waller County was driven largely by agriculture, with |
|
cotton being the foremost crop; a diverse population of African |
|
Americans, Italians, Irish, Germans, Poles, and Czechs came to the |
|
region in the late 18th century and early 19th century; recently, |
|
the county has experienced significant population growth; and |
|
WHEREAS, The citizens of Waller County are justly proud of |
|
their county's distinguished history and the many contributions its |
|
people have made to the growth and progress of our state; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize February 10, 2009, as Waller County |
|
Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the citizens |
|
of Waller County who have traveled to the Capitol for this |
|
commemoration. |
