R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, For her many outstanding contributions to her
  community, Barbara Broughton Sliva has been named the 2009 Woman of
  the Year by the Bay City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture; and
         WHEREAS, A Bay City native, Ms. Sliva was a student
  government leader and head baton twirler for the Blackcat Band at
  Bay City High School; after graduating in 1960, she attended The
  University of Texas at Austin; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Sliva returned to Bay City to marry and raise a
  family; when her children were older, she earned her bachelor's
  degree in accounting from the University of Houston at Clear Lake
  and became a certified public accountant; she worked for several
  accounting firms before starting her own practice; and
         WHEREAS, Throughout her life in Bay City, Ms. Sliva has been
  actively involved in her community, serving two terms as president
  of the Holy Cross PTA and also serving as treasurer of the Blackcat
  Band Parents and the Junior Service League; in addition, she has
  been a board member of the Matagorda County Birding Nature Center,
  the Matagorda County Community Foundation, and the Art League of
  Bay City; and
         WHEREAS, Today, Ms. Sliva is retired from full-time
  accounting, but she continues to work tirelessly in behalf of her
  community as a board member and as treasurer of Matagorda County
  Child Protective Services, as a board member and as president of the
  Bay City Public Library, and as treasurer of the Cedarvale Cemetery
  Trust; this boundlessly energetic woman is also a volunteer
  groundskeeper with the Birding Nature Center and a volunteer with
  the Angel Food Ministries of the Matagorda Episcopal Health
  Outreach Program; and
         WHEREAS, Towns and cities all across the Lone Star State
  thrive because of the selfless dedication of local volunteers, and
  Barbara Broughton Sliva has given abundantly of her time and
  talents in the finest tradition of Texas community service; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Barbara Broughton Sliva on her
  selection as the 2009 Woman of the Year in Bay City and extend to her
  sincere best wishes for continued fulfillment and happiness; and,
  be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Sliva as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
