R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the
  passing of Hester Smith Lockett of Brenham on June 26, 2008, at the
  age of 102; and
         WHEREAS, Born to Joseph Springer Smith and Hester Elizabeth
  Abbott on October 6, 1905, in Brenham, the former Hester Smith was a
  lifelong member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church; during her senior
  year in high school, she had the honor of being named the 1923
  Maifest queen, and she presided over the town's largest annual
  festival alongside that year's king, Reese B. Lockett; while the
  pair shared the throne, they formed a lasting connection; five
  years later, on August 14, 1928, Hester Smith married Reese Lockett
  at St. Peter's Episcopal Church of Brenham, and the couple were
  later blessed with two children, Reese and Hester; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Lockett, a graduate of The University of Texas,
  owned and operated a clothing store with her husband; in addition,
  Mr. Lockett served as mayor of Brenham for 28 years, and Mrs.
  Lockett played a strong supporting role during his tenure in
  office, which was marked by many milestone achievements for the
  city; and
         WHEREAS, Known for her charm and her sense of humor, Hester
  Lockett was a gracious and beloved figure in her hometown for more
  than a century, and although she will be deeply missed, she will be
  forever treasured in the hearts of all who knew her; now, therefore,
  be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Hester Smith
  Lockett and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family:  
  to her son, Reese B. Lockett, Jr., and his wife, Suzanne Lockett; to
  her daughter, Hester Kirkham, and her husband, the Reverend John
  Kirkham; to her grandchildren and their spouses, Hester and Bob
  Hodde, Wynn and Jim Dorsett, Anne and Taylor Pace, and Thorne and
  Carmen Gregory; to her 14 great-grandchildren; to her sister,
  Marion Sawyer; and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Hester
  Smith Lockett.
