R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Proud residents of Abernathy are celebrating the
  centennial of their community on the Fourth of July, 2009; and
         WHEREAS, Situated under the wide-open skies of the Llano
  Estacado, Abernathy was founded when the Santa Fe Railroad extended
  its line from Plainview to Lubbock; M. G. Abernathy, J. C. Roberds,
  and Marvin C. Overton created the South Plains Investment Company
  to promote the town, which was officially platted on July 8, 1909;
  and
         WHEREAS, Many of the town's original buildings were moved
  there from a nearby community, Bartonsite; by 1910, Abernathy had a
  post office, and by 1914 it claimed a population of 300, as well as
  four churches, several businesses, and a bank; and
         WHEREAS, Over its first two decades, Abernathy developed into
  a center for cotton and grain processing; incorporated in 1924, the
  town boasted a flour mill during the 1920s and 1930s, and from 1929
  to 1951, a cheese factory processed as much as 1,800 pounds of
  cheese a day; oil was discovered near the town in 1946; and
         WHEREAS, Today Abernathy continues to grow, with a new
  housing development, and a recently completed 38-acre park,
  featuring a fishing pond, playgrounds, and ball fields; residents
  also enjoy the benefits of a school system that excels in both
  academics and athletics; and
         WHEREAS, The 100th anniversary of Abernathy's founding
  provides a fine opportunity to recognize this outstanding community
  and to honor its citizens for their industry, their
  accomplishments, and their public spirit; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate Abernathy's centennial and extend
  to the town's residents sincere best wishes for a memorable and
  meaningful birthday celebration; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the city of Abernathy as an expression of high regard
  by the Texas House of Representatives.
