R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is pleased to |
|
recognize H. Thomas Kornegay on the occasion of his retirement as |
|
executive director of the Port of Houston Authority on February 1, |
|
2009, after 37 years of loyal service; and |
|
WHEREAS, Tom Kornegay joined the Port of Houston Authority in |
|
April 1972 and worked his way up through the ranks, serving in the |
|
engineering department and as managing director before becoming |
|
executive director 17 years ago; and |
|
WHEREAS, He is highly regarded as an engineer and a leader in |
|
his industry and is lauded for his significant contributions in |
|
advancing the mission of the Port of Houston as it expanded with the |
|
economic development of the Houston metropolitan region and the |
|
advancement of container shipping; and |
|
WHEREAS, He developed the master plan for the Fentress |
|
Bracewell Barbours Cut Container Terminal while in the engineering |
|
department; the terminal opened in 1976 and now ranks as the busiest |
|
container terminal on the United States Gulf Coast; he also oversaw |
|
the development of the Bayport Terminal, the deepening and widening |
|
of the Houston Ship Channel, and the Port of Houston Authority's |
|
recovery from Hurricane Ike; and |
|
WHEREAS, A leader in many professional and maritime industry |
|
organizations over the years, he served as president of the |
|
International Association of Ports and Harbors and as chairman of |
|
the board of the American Association of Port Authorities; his |
|
numerous accolades include being named Maritime Person of the Year |
|
by the Greater Houston Port Bureau and Houston Area Engineer of the |
|
Year by local engineers; and |
|
WHEREAS, Tom Kornegay's many accomplishments during his long |
|
tenure with the Port of Houston Authority are a testament to his |
|
dedication and his skill in engineering, management, and planning; |
|
he has been an inspiration to those who have had the pleasure of |
|
working with him, and his leadership will be greatly missed; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commend H. Thomas Kornegay for his many years of |
|
valuable service to the Port of Houston Authority and extend to him |
|
best wishes for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Kornegay as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
