R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Words cannot express the sorrow felt by the family, |
|
friends, and colleagues of Senior Corporal Norman S. Smith, an |
|
18-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department, who died in the |
|
line of duty on January 6, 2009, at the age of 43; and |
|
WHEREAS, Norman Smith was born on June 14, 1965, in |
|
Fontainebleau, France; he spent his early years in England, where |
|
he attended the Duke of York's Royal Military School in Dover; in |
|
1980 he moved to Kaufman, Texas, where he finished his final year of |
|
high school; and |
|
WHEREAS, After serving in the United States Marine Corps for |
|
four years, Mr. Smith joined the Dallas Police Department in 1991, |
|
initially working as a patrol officer in the Southeast Patrol |
|
Division; in the mid-1990s, he joined the Gang Unit, where he |
|
distinguished himself for 14 years until his death; and |
|
WHEREAS, This outstanding officer's work in the unit earned |
|
him the respect of the residents of the Pleasant Grove |
|
neighborhood, who appreciated his constant presence on the streets; |
|
he went the extra mile to help the young people in the area to avoid |
|
joining gangs, visiting H. Grady Spruce High School several times a |
|
month to talk with students; and |
|
WHEREAS, Senior Corporal Norman Smith was an exemplary police |
|
officer and a true friend to the community he served, as well as |
|
being a loving husband, father, and grandfather; regarded by his |
|
fellow officers as a man of great courage, heart, and dedication, he |
|
will be deeply missed by all those who were fortunate enough to have |
|
known him; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Norman S. Smith and |
|
extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his |
|
wife, Regina L. Smith; to his daughter, Clenique L. Williams; to his |
|
son, Karlis Smith; to his mother, Carolyn Long; to his stepfather, |
|
Dana Long; to his sister, Michelle; to his granddaughter, Marich; |
|
to his niece, Charlotte; to his nephew, Thomas; and to his other |
|
relatives and friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in honor of Norman S. |
|
Smith. |
