R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The people of Houston lost a brave and dedicated
  public servant when police officer Timothy Scott Abernethy was
  killed in the line of duty on December 7, 2008, at the age of 43; and
         WHEREAS, A native of Corpus Christi, Tim Abernethy was born
  on April 12, 1965; following in his father's footsteps, he joined
  the United States Navy, and he worked as a submarine electronics
  technician for nearly eight years; during that time, he met his
  future wife, Stephanie, who was also serving in the Navy; and
         WHEREAS, Officer Abernethy graduated from the Houston Police
  Academy in 1997 and quickly began to distinguish himself through
  his commitment and professionalism; he served on the Houston Police
  Department's dive team, bike patrol, and gang unit and earned two
  HPD Life Saving Awards; he completed his bachelor's degree while
  serving the department, and in summer 2008, he was accepted for bomb
  squad training; demonstrating an outstanding work ethic, he put in
  many extra hours back at his desk after each day he spent in
  training sessions; moreover, he also shared his time as a board
  member for the Houston Police Officers Union; and
         WHEREAS, Known for his quiet faith and courtesy to the
  public, Officer Abernethy led by example; he was devoted to his
  family and loved to talk about his daughter, Olivia, a graduate of
  Texas A&M University, and his son, Timothy, who joined the U.S.
  Navy; fellow officers admired his courage and integrity and enjoyed
  the sly wit that lay beneath his solemn manner; and
         WHEREAS, Tim Abernethy was an exceptional police officer who
  set and achieved the highest standards, and he will be remembered
  not only for his great sacrifice, but for the way he lived each day
  in service to others; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Officer Timothy Scott
  Abernethy and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family:
  to his wife, Stephanie Abernethy; to his daughter, Olivia Ann
  Abernethy; to his son, Timothy Scott Abernethy, Jr.; to his
  parents, Charles and Margaret Abernethy; to his sisters, Evelyn
  Campbell and her husband, Doug, and Margaret Ann Salazar and her
  husband, Pete; to his brothers, Brian Abernethy, David Abernethy
  and his wife, Ganjana, and Phillip Abernethy and his wife, Carrie;
  and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Tim
  Abernethy.
