H.R. No. 737

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Businesses that help maintain the historical
surroundings of the cities in which they are located provide a
valuable service to their communities, preserving rich experiences
from the past while also helping to create a vibrant and prosperous
  commercial environment; and
WHEREAS, Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill has established itself
as a beloved part of the dining and nightlife scene in downtown
Austin and stands as a living link to some of the city's earliest
  history; and
WHEREAS, The area where the business is located was once
known as the Waterloo Compound, a district that contained some of
the oldest commercial buildings in the city; in the early 1850s, a
German settler named Henry F. Hofheintz constructed a storehouse
and corncrib in the northwest part of the compound to be used by his
freight company; it later became known as the Sunday House because
  rural families would stay there during weekend visits to the town;
today, that building, complete with its limestone walls and cedar
posts, is Moonshine's private events facility; and
WHEREAS, During the mid-1800s, Mr. Hofheintz and other
members of his family added additional buildings nearby that have
become part of the Moonshine complex; the two-story building he
used as his residence and dry-goods store houses the restaurant's
main dining room, while a building constructed in the late 1870s is
today Moonshine's Carriage House Bar; and
WHEREAS, After continuing to serve as a retail dry-goods
emporium through the 1950s, these venerable buildings were occupied
by several different businesses before being transformed into the
Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill in 2003; the complex has been placed on
the National Register of Historic Places, and the lovingly restored
stone and wood structures now create a handsome and atmospheric
home for this popular downtown gathering spot; and
WHEREAS, A visit to the Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill allows
patrons to reflect on the heritage and achievements of previous
generations of Texans, and this admirable business is deserving of
recognition for its efforts to preserve the city's cultural and
architectural heritage; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill for
its role in preserving the historical character of Austin and
  extend best wishes to the business's owners for continued success;
  and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the restaurant as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
