R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Kingsville are gathering in Austin |
|
on March 11, 2009, to celebrate Kingsville Day at the State Capitol; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Founded on Independence Day 1905, Kingsville is home |
|
to the world-famous King Ranch, which helped develop the Santa |
|
Gertrudis cattle breed and has long been a prominent supplier of |
|
quarter horses; moreover, the ranch was the home of Triple Crown |
|
winner Assault and has been a leader in agriculture for more than |
|
150 years; and |
|
WHEREAS, An important regional center for education, the city |
|
is the site of Texas A&M University--Kingsville, which includes the |
|
Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering, the Dick and Mary |
|
Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture, the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife |
|
Research Institute, and the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy; |
|
among its many achievements, the university has claimed seven |
|
college football national championships and developed the Star Ruby |
|
variety of red grapefruit, and it has been the flagship of higher |
|
education in South Texas since 1925; and |
|
WHEREAS, Naval Air Station Kingsville is home to the premier |
|
undergraduate pilot training facility in the United States, which |
|
prepares U.S. Navy and Marine Corps pilots for their key role in |
|
national defense; and |
|
WHEREAS, Kingsville has volunteered its sons and daughters to |
|
take part in every major military conflict fought by the U.S. in the |
|
past 100 years; the city's roll call of esteemed veterans includes |
|
General Dickie Cavazos, the first four-star general of Mexican |
|
American descent in the United States Army; and |
|
WHEREAS, Today, this notable South Texas city, along with the |
|
rest of Kleberg County and neighboring Kenedy County, is a place of |
|
diversified industries; supported by multiple energy sources, |
|
including oil, gas, nuclear, wind, and solar generating facilities, |
|
the economy of the Kingsville area has continued to grow; this has |
|
resulted in new jobs, increased construction, and an improved |
|
quality of life for its citizens; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize March 11, 2009, as Kingsville Day at |
|
the State Capitol and commend area residents for the countless |
|
contributions they have made to the development of the region, |
|
state, and country. |
