R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The many contributions of Bessie M. Swindle to the
  city of Houston are being recognized with the dedication of the
  Bessie Swindle Community Center on March 21, 2009; and
         WHEREAS, For more than 30 years, Bessie Swindle has used her
  skills as a community organizer to make a difference in Houston; in
  1985, she founded and served as president of the Cloverland Civic
  Club, representing 400 homeowners in the neighborhood, sponsoring
  fund-raisers, aiding needy families, and raising money for
  scholarships; and
         WHEREAS, Since 1994, she has been president of the Southeast
  Coalition of Civic Clubs, promoting community awareness, and more
  recently, she was appointed outreach coordinator for Congressman Al
  Green of the Ninth District; she has also served as community
  liaison for the constable's office in Precinct 7 and as a troop
  leader for the San Jacinto Council of the Girl Scouts of America;
  since 1969, Ms. Swindle has been an active member and volunteer at
  St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church; and
         WHEREAS, This energetic and compassionate citizen has earned
  many awards and recognitions for her work over the years, including
  Parent of the Year from James H. Law Elementary in 1975, the Mayor's
  Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in 1996, the Texas
  Legislative Black Caucus Award in 1999, and the Sir Knight Dennis
  Armelin Humanitarian Award in 2004, among others; in 2007, the City
  of Houston honored her with Bessie M. Swindle Day and Partnership of
  Service Day; and
         WHEREAS, Formerly the Cloverland Community Center, the
  Bessie Swindle Community Center is being renamed in Ms. Swindle's
  honor by the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and this
  occasion offers a fine opportunity to pay tribute to this esteemed
  community leader; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of the Bessie Swindle
  Community Center and recognize Ms. Swindle for her many good works;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Swindle as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
