R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Citizens from La Joya and McAllen who are members of
  the Texas affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers are
  visiting the State Capitol on March 16, 2009; and
         WHEREAS, Chartered in 1974, Texas AFT represents more than
  61,000 teachers, counselors, librarians, custodians, and other
  non-administrative school employees across the Lone Star State; a
  leader in the areas of salary and health insurance improvements and
  teacher certification, Texas AFT is also recognized for the
  implementation of a statewide leadership development program that
  has become the model for other state federations; and
         WHEREAS, The members of Texas AFT work to create a supportive
  environment conducive to learning and to ensure equal opportunity
  for all students through a strong system of public schools; and
         WHEREAS, The union also strives to raise the standards of all
  the professions employed in the schools and to secure working
  conditions that will enable the various staff members represented
  to render the best possible service; and
         WHEREAS, The members of Texas AFT believe that a vigorous
  system of public schools is essential to preserving the liberties
  and the robust, representative form of government that have so long
  made this country a beacon for all the world, and they are to be
  commended for their steadfast advocacy in behalf of the public
  schools, their students, and their employees; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby welcome the members of Texas AFT who are
  visiting the State Capitol from La Joya and McAllen and extend to
  them sincere best wishes for a memorable stay in Austin.
