R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Residents of League City are marking the centennial
  of the Butler Building, the oldest brick structure on the mainland
  of Galveston County; and
         WHEREAS, Completed in 1909, the Butler Building was
  constructed by George Washington Butler, who came to the area with
  his pioneer family as a child in the mid-19th century; after the
  Civil War, Mr. Butler became a prominent cattleman, and went on to
  serve as Galveston County commissioner and as postmaster for the
  community first known as Butler's Ranch or Clear Creek; in
  addition, Mr. Butler built the first school, housed in a log cabin,
  and was instrumental in the development of the bridge that joined
  Galveston with the mainland; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Butler convinced Galveston financier John
  League to buy land near the Butler home and plat streets for the
  town that would be renamed League City; Mr. Butler also worked to
  bring a bank to the community, promising the Galveston firm of
  Hutchins and Sealy that he would construct a first-class facility;
  designed by architect Andrew Dow, the L-shaped Butler Building
  initially housed the Citizen's State Bank, a drug store, a hardware
  store, and professional offices; and
         WHEREAS, In later years, the Butler Building fell into
  disrepair, until it was purchased and renovated by a local
  architect; today, the elegant building again houses professional
  offices, as well as Butler's Courtyard, an award-winning special
  event facility that has hosted more than 500 weddings since 2003;
  the League City Historical Society has recognized the building with
  a historic medallion; and
         WHEREAS, The Butler Building holds a special place in the
  chronicles of League City, and in its 100th year, it continues to
  bring vitality to the historic center of town; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
  construction of the Butler Building in League City and extend best
  wishes to all those associated with the preservation of this
  venerable edifice.
