R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, On March 13, 2009, Representative Joe Farias is
  celebrating his birthday, and we join his friends and family in
  marking this noteworthy occasion; and
         WHEREAS, Our esteemed colleague is a lifelong resident of
  House District 118; he graduated from McCollum High School in San
  Antonio, and volunteered for the United States Army in 1968;
  following 12 months in Vietnam, he was stationed in Berlin, where he
  graduated from the Seventh Army NCO Academy and was promoted to the
  rank of staff sergeant; and
         WHEREAS, Having completed his three-year enlistment, Joe
  Farias returned to San Antonio and immediately joined City Public
  Service as a machinist; he held a series of progressively
  responsible positions at the municipally owned utility and
  ultimately became supervisor of the technical training division
  before retiring in 2003 after a distinguished 32-year career; and
         WHEREAS, This civic-minded Texan learned the importance of
  loyalty, integrity, and service during his time in the military,
  and he continued to demonstrate those values as a member of the San
  Antonio Zoning Commission and during three terms on the board of the
  Harlandale Independent School District; in addition, he gave
  generously of his time and talents as a Little League coach, on the
  board of St. Leo the Great Catholic School, and by hosting
  fund-raisers for community members in need; and
         WHEREAS, First elected to the house in 2006, Representative
  Farias was named the Mexican American Legislative Caucus Freshman
  of the Year for the 80th Legislative Session; he demonstrates his
  unwavering concern for his fellow veterans and for the children of
  Texas as a member of the committees on defense and veterans' affairs
  and public education, and he also serves on the rules and
  resolutions committee; and
         WHEREAS, A committed public servant, Representative Farias
  is supported in all of his endeavors by his wife, Angie, and their
  sons, Gabe, Joey, Jaime, and Daniel, and it is indeed a pleasure to
  add our congratulations to theirs on this special day; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize the Honorable Joe Farias on the
  occasion of his birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for
  continued success and happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Representative Farias as an expression of high regard
  by his colleagues in the Texas House of Representatives.
