R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The year 2009 marks the 50th anniversary of Andrew
  Jackson Elementary School in McAllen; and
         WHEREAS, Since it first opened its doors in 1959, Andrew
  Jackson Elementary has sought to provide a safe and nurturing
  environment in which the staff are committed to instruction that is
  flexible, child-centered, and relevant to the real world; this
  noteworthy institution has built a strong educational foundation
  for generations of McAllen residents, including NASA astronaut
  Michael Fossum, and it continues to empower its students to become
  responsible citizens, with the support of staff, parents, and the
  community; and
         WHEREAS, Today, Andrew Jackson Elementary serves nearly 800
  students enrolled in kindergarten through the fifth grade under the
  skilled leadership of principal Joe A. Garza, and its mascot is the
  jaguar; the school is guided by the motto, "Parents Plus Students
  Plus Staff Equals a Winning Combination"; and
         WHEREAS, Andrew Jackson Elementary has earned numerous
  accolades for maintaining high academic standards, including the
  Governor's Excellence in Education Award, which was based on
  student performance in 2007 and 2008; in addition, the school has
  obtained a "Recognized" rating from the Texas Education Agency for
  the past four years, and it received TEA Gold Performance
  Acknowledgments in science, math, and writing in 2008; moreover,
  Andrew Jackson Elementary was selected to participate in an ongoing
  state pilot study on effective reading strategies as a Reading
  First Campus; and
         WHEREAS, The education of young Texans is a vital enterprise
  for every school in our state, and Andrew Jackson Elementary has
  dedicated itself to that worthy goal for half a century; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of Andrew
  Jackson Elementary School and extend to its teachers, students, and
  staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Andrew Jackson Elementary School as an expression of
  high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
