R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The life and achievements of veteran journalist and |
|
|
Chicano activist Joe Olvera were recognized during a celebration in |
|
|
El Paso on January 17, 2009, when he received the Star on the |
|
|
Mountain Award from the City of El Paso and the Chicano Lifetime |
|
|
Achievement Award from Del Pueblo Press; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A native of El Paso, Mr. Olvera began his work in |
|
|
journalism as the sports editor of the Jefferson High School |
|
|
newspaper; he went on to serve his nation in the U.S. Air Force and |
|
|
later pursued studies at The University of Texas at El Paso and at |
|
|
Columbia University in New York City; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This pioneering writer and reporter has worked for |
|
|
USA Today, the El Paso Times, and the El Paso Herald-Post; moreover, |
|
|
he was one of the first Chicanos to work in El Paso television news, |
|
|
as a reporter for KDBC-TV; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Mr. Olvera has been an |
|
|
uncompromising voice for justice and equality, closing each of his |
|
|
columns with his trademark "sin fin," Spanish for "without end"; he |
|
|
has also published books, including Voces de la gente and |
|
|
Chicano--Sin Fin! Memoirs of a Chicano Journalist; he continues to |
|
|
speak out, writing forthrightly about politics and his personal |
|
|
struggle with diabetes; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Joe Olvera has made an indelible mark on the field of |
|
|
journalism, and his fellow El Pasoans are justifiably proud of this |
|
|
accomplished native son; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Joe Olvera on winning the Star on |
|
|
the Mountain Award from the City of El Paso and the Chicano Lifetime |
|
|
Achievement Award from Del Pueblo Press and extend to him sincere |
|
|
best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Mr. Olvera as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
|
House of Representatives. |
