R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Through the efforts of the Healthy Nacogdoches
  Coalition, the city of Nacogdoches has won gold level recognition
  from the Texas Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke; and
         WHEREAS, The council began its Heart and Stroke Healthy City
  Recognition Program in 2003 to promote good heart health practices
  by focusing on cities that implement beneficial policies and
  activities; the program emphasizes proven interventions that
  improve physical activity and eating habits, reduce tobacco use,
  and decrease response time to heart attacks and strokes; in
  conjunction with the Texas Department of State Health Services, the
  council assesses such indicators as public information campaigns,
  city smoking ordinances, and health programs and daily physical
  activity in public schools; and
         WHEREAS, Hosted by Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital, the
  Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition brings together local businesses,
  schools, health organizations, and others concerned about public
  wellness; the year-old coalition has worked diligently to improve
  heart health in the community and was instrumental in the adoption
  of a municipal public smoking ban, which took effect in July 2008;
  and
         WHEREAS, The coalition's numerous contributions include
  increasing the safety of walking trails, promoting awareness of the
  Walk Across Texas campaign, raising the profile of the local
  farmers market, and developing a guide for local restaurants to
  highlight their healthy food choices; in achieving gold level
  recognition, the city met all 40 criteria evaluated by the Texas
  Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke; and
         WHEREAS, Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the
  Lone Star State, and cardiovascular disease kills the third highest
  number of Texans; by promoting citywide and countywide changes to
  the health environment, the Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition is
  helping countless area residents lead longer, healthier lives; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate the Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition
  on winning gold level recognition for their city from the Texas
  Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke and extend to
  coalition members best wishes for continued success; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the coalition as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
