R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Our nation faces great energy and environmental
  challenges because of our reliance on foreign sources of energy and
  because of emissions caused by both mobile and static sources; and
         WHEREAS, The state's abundant wind resources diversify our
  energy mix, provide cost-competitive power, and protect our
  environment; moreover, they contribute to economic growth through
  the creation of jobs; and
         WHEREAS, Texas has taken a key role in building transmission
  capacity to bring power from wind-rich areas to populated urban
  areas through the creation of Competitive Renewable Energy Zones;
  and
         WHEREAS, The nation's leader in wind energy production, Texas
  currently generates more than 8,000 megawatts of electricity from
  wind with another 1,630 megawatts under construction; together,
  this is enough energy to power 2.4 million homes; and
         WHEREAS, Texas produces more wind energy than all but five
  countries, behind only the United States, Germany, Spain, China,
  and India; by 2011, the state's wind industry will generate more
  than three times as much electricity as any other state in the
  United States; and
         WHEREAS, Texas Wind Energy Day at the State Capitol features
  educational events and exhibits in the rotunda that are designed to
  help citizens and their elected officials gain a deeper
  understanding of how this clean, renewable energy strengthens
  communities; and
         WHEREAS, The Lone Star State is a leader in the global energy
  industry, and every Texan has a vested interest in ensuring that
  future generations have abundant energy resources that are clean
  and completely renewable; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize March 25, 2009, as Texas Wind Energy
  Day at the State Capitol in honor of the state's vibrant wind
  industry.
