R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Representatives from St. Edward's University are |
|
|
gathering at the State Capitol on April 8, 2009; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Founded in 1885 by the Congregation of Holy Cross, |
|
|
St. Edward's University is a Catholic liberal arts institution |
|
|
committed to serving students of diverse cultural, religious, |
|
|
educational, and economic backgrounds; emphasizing critical |
|
|
thinking, social justice, and ethical practice, St. Edward's |
|
|
provides an experiential, service-oriented, and academically |
|
|
rigorous environment in which students are encouraged to explore |
|
|
their own social, spiritual, and global paths; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This private university is ably guided by Dr. George |
|
|
E. Martin; since he became its 23rd president in 1999, Dr. Martin |
|
|
has helped increase undergraduate enrollment by 60 percent, and yet |
|
|
he has also ensured that the institution maintains a low |
|
|
student-to-faculty ratio; under Dr. Martin's skilled leadership, |
|
|
St. Edward's has been recognized as one of the best colleges in |
|
|
America by U.S. News & World Report for six consecutive years, and |
|
|
it has continued offering such vital programs as CAMP, the College |
|
|
Assistance Migrant Program that has given migrant students access |
|
|
to higher education for nearly four decades; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, St. Edward's is committed to helping its students |
|
|
realize their full potential, and its efforts are preparing many |
|
|
young Texans for the challenges and opportunities of the future; |
|
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby recognize April 8, 2009, as St. Edward's |
|
|
University Day at the State Capitol and extend to those associated |
|
|
with this notable institution sincere best wishes for continued |
|
|
success; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for St. Edward's University as an expression of high |
|
|
regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
