R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The Live Oak Beefmaster Breeders Association is
  celebrating the 35th anniversary of its founding in 2009; and
         WHEREAS, In the early 1930s, rancher Tom Lasater of Duval and
  Brooks Counties developed the Beefmaster breed by crossing
  Hereford, Shorthorn, and Brahman cattle; officially recognized as a
  pure breed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1954,
  Beefmaster cattle thrive in the climate of South Texas; and
         WHEREAS, The organization Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU)
  was formed in 1961, and in 1974, the Live Oak Beefmaster Breeders
  Association (LOBBA) was founded as an official satellite to the
  BBU, working to assist Beefmaster breeders in Live Oak County and
  neighboring counties in marketing their cattle; and
         WHEREAS, In 1977, LOBBA's members financed and built the
  Beefmaster barn and auction ring at the Live Oak County
  Fairgrounds, donating the barn to the Fair Association in 1984; the
  association sponsors three cattle auctions a year at the facility,
  drawing buyers from across the South and the Southwest, as well as
  from Mexico; and
         WHEREAS, LOBBA auctions have generated more than $14 million
  in cattle sales and contributed over $3.5 million to the economy of
  Live Oak County; the association has also donated $25,000 to the
  South Texas Children's Home and $15,000 to the Junior Beefmaster
  Breeders Association; it has sponsored a number of educational
  events; and
         WHEREAS, Under the leadership of president Ricardo O.
  Carrillo and vice president Lawrence Lyssy, the Live Oak Beefmaster
  Breeders Association continues to play a vital role in the growth
  and prosperity of South Texas, and its members may take great pride
  in their many contributions to the economy and to the culture of
  cattle ranching; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Live Oak
  Beefmaster Breeders Association and extend to its members sincere
  best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the association as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
