R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Westwood Junior High School in Dallas was awarded |
|
"Recognized" status by the Texas Education Agency in 2008; and |
|
WHEREAS, To ensure that all students in Texas benefit from |
|
the highest standards of education, the TEA instituted an |
|
accountability rating system for the state's public schools and |
|
districts; a campus gains "Recognized" status if at least 75 |
|
percent of its students pass each of the Texas Assessment of |
|
Knowledge and Skills subject area tests, and in 2008, only 34 |
|
percent of all schools earned this distinction; and |
|
WHEREAS, Westwood is the Richardson Independent School |
|
District's Math, Science, and Leadership Magnet and has earned |
|
"Recognized" status every year since 2004; providing instruction |
|
for youth in grades seven and eight, the school currently has an |
|
enrollment of approximately 640 students who develop their skills |
|
and knowledge in such programs as the RISD/Texas Instruments Math |
|
Initiative, the Science Olympiad, and Advancement Via Individual |
|
Determination; guided by principal Peggy Dillon, the faculty and |
|
staff strive to help their pupils realize their full potential; and |
|
WHEREAS, The teachers and students of Westwood Junior High |
|
School have demonstrated outstanding dedication and perseverance |
|
in their pursuit of academic excellence, and they may indeed take |
|
justifiable pride in the accolade their school has received from |
|
the State of Texas; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Westwood Junior High School on its |
|
achievement of a "Recognized" rating from the Texas Education |
|
Agency in 2008 and extend to its students, teachers, and staff |
|
sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
