R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Lee E. Henderson is retiring from Prairie View |
|
|
A&M University on November 20, 2009, after an eminent 38-year |
|
|
career as a professor of biology; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A native of Waller County, Lee Henderson graduated |
|
|
as valedictorian of Ralph J. Bunche High School in Brookshire and |
|
|
went on to earn both his bachelor's and master's degrees in biology |
|
|
at Prairie View, as well as an additional master's degree in |
|
|
education; he taught science in public schools for five years |
|
|
before entering the U.S. Navy's Officer Candidate School in |
|
|
Newport, Rhode Island; serving his country for five years and |
|
|
rising to the rank of lieutenant, he returned to Prairie View for |
|
|
his final military assignment as the senior instructor of the Naval |
|
|
Reserve Officer Training Corps; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Henderson received his doctoral degree in |
|
|
science education from the University of Houston in 1980 and became |
|
|
an associate professor at Prairie View; he has played an important |
|
|
role in the school's biology department, teaching approximately 250 |
|
|
students each year and leading classes in anatomy and physiology |
|
|
for pre-nursing students; his rigorous instruction and high |
|
|
standards have helped prepare degree candidates for professional |
|
|
success in a demanding field; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. |
|
|
Henderson served as a reviewer for several editions of a major |
|
|
clinical textbook, and he has served on many departmental and |
|
|
university-wide committees as well as on the faculty senate; his |
|
|
professional affiliations include the National Association for |
|
|
Research in Science Teaching, the American Association for |
|
|
Advancement of Science, and the Texas Association of College |
|
|
Teachers; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This dynamic Texan has also contributed to the |
|
|
Prairie View community in myriad ways, most notably as the town's |
|
|
mayor for two terms beginning in 1990; in all his endeavors, he |
|
|
enjoys the love and support of his wife, Shirley, and their three |
|
|
sons, Daryl, Michael, and Cory; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, For nearly four decades, Lee Henderson has dedicated |
|
|
himself to the students of Prairie View A&M, and his commitment to |
|
|
excellence will long continue to inspire all those who are |
|
|
privileged to know this outstanding educator; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Lee E. Henderson on his |
|
|
retirement from Prairie View A&M University and extend to him |
|
|
sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Dr. Henderson as an expression of high regard by the |
|
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
