| WHEREAS, Dr. Lee E. Henderson is retiring from Prairie View | ||
| A&M University on November 20, 2009, after an eminent 38-year | ||
| career as a professor of biology; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A native of Waller County, Lee Henderson graduated | ||
| as valedictorian of Ralph J. Bunche High School in Brookshire and | ||
| went on to earn both his bachelor's and master's degrees in biology | ||
| at Prairie View, as well as an additional master's degree in | ||
| education; he taught science in public schools for five years | ||
| before entering the U.S. Navy's Officer Candidate School in | ||
| Newport, Rhode Island; serving his country for five years and | ||
| rising to the rank of lieutenant, he returned to Prairie View for | ||
| his final military assignment as the senior instructor of the Naval | ||
| Reserve Officer Training Corps; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Dr. Henderson received his doctoral degree in | ||
| science education from the University of Houston in 1980 and became | ||
| an associate professor at Prairie View; he has played an important | ||
| role in the school's biology department, teaching approximately 250 | ||
| students each year and leading classes in anatomy and physiology | ||
| for pre-nursing students; his rigorous instruction and high | ||
| standards have helped prepare degree candidates for professional | ||
| success in a demanding field; and | ||
| WHEREAS, In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. | ||
| Henderson served as a reviewer for several editions of a major | ||
| clinical textbook, and he has served on many departmental and | ||
| university-wide committees as well as on the faculty senate; his | ||
| professional affiliations include the National Association for | ||
| Research in Science Teaching, the American Association for | ||
| Advancement of Science, and the Texas Association of College | ||
| Teachers; and | ||
| WHEREAS, This dynamic Texan has also contributed to the | ||
| Prairie View community in myriad ways, most notably as the town's | ||
| mayor for two terms beginning in 1990; in all his endeavors, he | ||
| enjoys the love and support of his wife, Shirley, and their three | ||
| sons, Daryl, Michael, and Cory; and | ||
| WHEREAS, For nearly four decades, Lee Henderson has dedicated | ||
| himself to the students of Prairie View A&M, and his commitment to | ||
| excellence will long continue to inspire all those who are | ||
| privileged to know this outstanding educator; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Lee E. Henderson on his | ||
| retirement from Prairie View A&M University and extend to him | ||
| sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for Dr. Henderson as an expression of high regard by the | ||
| Texas House of Representatives. | ||
