R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Dr. Lee E. Henderson is retiring from Prairie View
  A&M University on May 2, 2009, after an eminent 38-year career as a
  professor of biology; and
         WHEREAS, A native of Waller County, Lee Henderson graduated
  as valedictorian of Ralph J. Bunche High School in Brookshire and
  went on to earn both his bachelor's and master's degrees in biology
  at Prairie View, as well as an additional master's degree in
  education; he taught science in public schools for five years
  before entering the U.S. Navy's Officer Candidate School in
  Newport, Rhode Island; serving his country for five years and
  rising to the rank of lieutenant, he returned to Prairie View for
  his final military assignment as the senior instructor of the Naval
  Reserve Officer Training Corps; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Henderson received his doctoral degree in
  science education from the University of Houston in 1980 and became
  an associate professor at Prairie View; he has played an important
  role in the school's biology department, teaching approximately 250
  students each year and leading classes in anatomy and physiology
  for pre-nursing students; his rigorous instruction and high
  standards have helped prepare degree candidates for professional
  success in a demanding field; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr.
  Henderson served as a reviewer for several editions of a major
  clinical textbook, and he has served on many departmental and
  university-wide committees as well as on the faculty senate; his
  professional affiliations include the National Association for
  Research in Science Teaching, the American Association for
  Advancement of Science, and the Texas Association of College
  Teachers; and
         WHEREAS, This dynamic Texan has also contributed to the
  Prairie View community in myriad ways, most notably as the town's
  mayor for two terms beginning in 1990; in all his endeavors, he
  enjoys the love and support of his wife, Shirley, and their three
  sons, Daryl, Michael, and Cory; and
         WHEREAS, For nearly four decades, Lee Henderson has dedicated
  himself to the students of Prairie View A&M, and his commitment to
  excellence will long continue to inspire all those who are
  privileged to know this outstanding educator; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Lee E. Henderson on his
  retirement from Prairie View A&M University and extend to him
  sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Dr. Henderson as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
