R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever cherish their
  memories of Wayne E. Glenn of Houston, who passed away on February
  10, 2009, at the age of 93; and
         WHEREAS, A native of Fort Worth, Mr. Glenn was born on
  November 3, 1915; he attended The University of Texas at Arlington
  and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1940 with a degree
  in petroleum engineering; as a student, he met Barbara Ellen
  Gamble, with whom he shared a loving marriage of 67 years; and
         WHEREAS, Serving his country in World War II, Mr. Glenn
  trained troops in East Texas, and his unit won the Best Company
  Award for the Texas-Oklahoma Region; in 1942, he joined the Army
  Secret Service to work undercover as an engineer at the Dow Plant in
  Freeport; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Glenn began his successful career in the oil
  industry in 1940, when he was hired by Continental Oil Company as a
  field roustabout; he later joined Conoco, where he was part of a
  team that transformed the company from a regional independent to a
  major international oil corporation; and
         WHEREAS, In 1977, he retired from Conoco as vice chair of the
  board of directors in charge of worldwide exploration, production,
  and mineral development; he went on to establish Wayne E. Glenn &
  Associates, an independent oil and gas company; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Glenn earned a reputation as a leader and an
  innovator in his field, and in the mid-1960s he convened a
  conference of oil industry engineers that is known today as the
  Offshore Technology Conference; moreover, his research team at
  Conoco designed and patented the first tension-leg, deep-water
  drilling and production platform, now used throughout the world;
  and
         WHEREAS, Throughout his career, this notable Texan worked
  tirelessly on behalf of industry associations, and he served as
  president of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the American
  Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers and as
  director of the American Petroleum Institute, the Mid-Continent Oil
  and Gas Association, and the Texas Mid-Continent Oil and Gas
  Association; and
         WHEREAS, His professional community honored him with
  numerous awards, including the 2002 AIME Distinguished Service
  Award, the 1972 SPE DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal, and the
  1973 Chief Roughneck Award from the Independent Petroleum
  Association of America; he was also the first recipient of the
  Distinguished Service Award granted by the Petroleum Society of the
  Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, and the
  John Rogers Award from the Southwestern Legal Foundation; and
         WHEREAS, Maintaining a connection with the schools he
  attended, Mr. Glenn received multiple Distinguished Alumni Awards
  from The University of Texas at Arlington and the University of
  Oklahoma; recognizing the value of education, he attended the
  Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program in 1957, and he
  was also awarded an honorary Ph.D. from the Montana School of Mines;
  and
         WHEREAS, Although Wayne Glenn is deeply missed, the memory of
  his enthusiasm and passion for life, his work ethic, and his
  devotion to his family remains to comfort and inspire those who knew
  him well; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Wayne E. Glenn and
  extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
  Barbara Glenn; to his daughter, Ellen G. Golden and her husband,
  Paul; to his sons, Carvel Wayne Glenn and his partner, Randall, and
  Lawrence E. Glenn and his wife, Louise; to his grandchildren, Laura
  and Catherine Golden, Dr. Elizabeth Sweeney and her husband, Jon,
  and Travis and Peter Glenn; and to his other relatives and friends;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Wayne
  Glenn.
