R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Demonstrating outstanding skill and dedication, the
  DeSoto High School boys' basketball team captured the 2009
  University Interscholastic League 5A state championship on March
  15, 2009, by defeating the Cedar Hill Longhorns at the Frank Erwin
  Center in Austin; and
         WHEREAS, This victory capped off an exceptional season for
  the Eagles, during which they notched 33 wins with only 8 losses and
  beat the previously undefeated Houston Strake Jesuit squad in the
  5A state tournament semifinals; the 2009 title is DeSoto's second
  in the past six years; and
         WHEREAS, Guard Dominique Bennett led all scorers in the title
  game, tallying 21 points and shooting better than 50 percent from
  the field; in addition, forward Darius Terrell turned in a superb
  effort, racking up 11 points and 11 rebounds; and
         WHEREAS, The memorable 2008-2009 season also included
  important contributions from the other members of the DeSoto
  roster: Andrew Ensley, Evan Washington, Derico Dandridge, Alex
  Wilson, Deon Pleasant, Gerodd Calahan, Derius Bolton, Antawn Space,
  Taylor Alexander, and Keith Davis; and
         WHEREAS, Head coach Chris Dyer and assistants George Golden,
  Kory McIver, and Bill Barstow provided able guidance to the Eagles
  throughout the season, schooling the players in basketball
  fundamentals and inspiring them to reach their full potential; and
         WHEREAS, Winning a state championship represents the
  culmination of countless hours of hard work and an enduring
  commitment to excellence, and the talented student-athletes of the
  DeSoto basketball squad will carry the memory of this
  accomplishment with them for years to come; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate the DeSoto High School boys' 
  basketball team on winning the 2009 UIL 5A state championship and
  extend to the players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for
  continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
