R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Wen Chyan, a 17-year-old student at the Texas |
|
Academy of Mathematics and Science at the University of North |
|
Texas, won the national Siemens Competition in Math, Science & |
|
Technology and an accompanying $100,000 scholarship; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Siemens Competition in Math, Science & |
|
Technology recognizes remarkable talent at the high school level |
|
and fosters individual growth for high school students who are |
|
willing to challenge themselves through science research; and |
|
WHEREAS, Nearly 1,900 students throughout the nation entered |
|
the competition, but only 18 finalists were chosen to present their |
|
projects in New York; the competition was administered by the |
|
College Board and sponsored by the Siemens Foundation, the |
|
philanthropic arm of Siemens AG, a global electronics and |
|
engineering company; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Chyan won the top individual prize for his |
|
research toward developing antimicrobial coatings for medical |
|
devices to help prevent nosocomial infections, which spread within |
|
hospital environments, afflict millions of patients each year, and |
|
result in more than 100,000 deaths annually; and |
|
WHEREAS, This accomplished young Texan created a polymer with |
|
imbedded silver ions that prevents and kills bacterial biofilms; |
|
the polymer can be used on catheters, breathing tubes, and other |
|
medical devices that have direct contact with patients; and |
|
WHEREAS, The son of Oliver Chyan and Jin-Jian Chen, Mr. Chyan |
|
hopes to attend MIT or Harvard after graduating from the Texas |
|
Academy of Mathematics and Science, which is a two-year residential |
|
program at UNT that allows talented students to complete their |
|
freshman and sophomore years of college while earning their high |
|
school diplomas; and |
|
WHEREAS, Wen Chyan demonstrated outstanding skill, |
|
creativity, and dedication in the development and execution of this |
|
award-winning project, and it is indeed a pleasure to join in |
|
congratulating him on his accomplishment; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Wen Chyan on winning the Siemens |
|
Competition in Math, Science & Technology and extend to him sincere |
|
best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Chyan as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
