R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, An esteemed educator and archeologist, Robert J.
  Mallouf retired as director of the Center for Big Bend Studies at
  Sul Ross State University in August 2008; and
         WHEREAS, A native of Brownwood, Bob Mallouf attended Howard
  Payne University before transferring to The University of Texas at
  Austin, where he earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology in
  1970; he went on to study at the University of California at
  Berkeley and the American University of Cairo as a scholarship
  recipient; he later resumed his studies at UT Austin, and in 1985,
  he attained a master's degree in anthropology; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Mallouf worked in archeology with the State of
  Texas for more than 36 years, including nearly a quarter-century
  with the Archeology Division of the Texas Historical Commission,
  and he has held such positions as state archeologist and both field
  and survey archeologist; and
         WHEREAS, After joining Sul Ross State University in 1995, Mr.
  Mallouf set out to expand the Center for Big Bend Studies, and in
  the 13 years he served as its director, the program budget went from
  $15,000 to $600,000, and 16 staff members were added; he also
  expanded the center to allow for contractual archeology projects,
  including one in Big Bend National Park, and he oversaw the launch
  of a five-year research endeavor, the Trans-Pecos Archeological
  Program; dividing his time between administering the program,
  teaching, fund-raising, and excavating, Mr. Mallouf helped
  establish the Friends of the Center for Big Bend Studies, which has
  attracted several million dollars in grants and private donations;
  and
         WHEREAS, Bob Mallouf made lasting contributions to Sul Ross,
  to his profession, and to the community at large, and he may indeed
  reflect with great pride on a career well spent; now, therefore, be
  it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Robert J. Mallouf on his retirement
  as director of the Center for Big Bend Studies at Sul Ross State
  University and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Mallouf as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
