R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Marla M. Guerra, superintendent of South Texas |
|
ISD, has earned the 2009 Texas Excellence in Education Award from |
|
AdvancED; and |
|
WHEREAS, AdvancED is the parent organization of the North |
|
Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School |
|
Improvement (NCA CASI), Southern Association of Colleges and |
|
Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS |
|
CASI), and Commission on International and TransRegional |
|
Accreditation (CITA); and |
|
WHEREAS, The Excellence in Education Award honors one |
|
individual from each of the state NCA CASI and SACS CASI chapters |
|
for the individual's achievements in education; nominees are judged |
|
on their efforts to generate a common vision and mission for higher |
|
expectations among students, faculty, and the education community; |
|
demonstrate a record of significant and distinguished contribution |
|
to the education profession; provide a lasting, positive impact on |
|
student learning; serve as a role model and mentor for students and |
|
future generations of educators; and demonstrate significant |
|
professional contribution to SACS CASI; and |
|
WHEREAS, A truly deserving recipient, Dr. Guerra has worked |
|
to raise TAKS, SAT, and ACT scores throughout the Rio Grande Valley, |
|
and her efforts have led to increased participation in pre-advanced |
|
placement and advanced placement courses; moreover, under her |
|
leadership all four South Texas ISD high schools have earned |
|
placement in the U.S. News & World Report "America's Best High |
|
Schools: The Top 100" list, as well as the title of Honor Roll |
|
School by the Texas Business & Education Coalition; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Guerra's career in education began with the |
|
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District, where she served |
|
as a teacher, principal, district planning coordinator, and |
|
district administrator during her 23-year tenure; she went on to |
|
become an assistant professor in the department of educational |
|
leadership at The University of Texas--Pan American before joining |
|
South Texas ISD in 2001; and |
|
WHEREAS, A graduate of Texas Woman's University, Dr. Guerra |
|
earned her master's degree at Pan American University and her |
|
doctorate from the University of Houston; and |
|
WHEREAS, Young people are the Lone Star State's most precious |
|
resource, and those Texans who devote themselves to their education |
|
are truly deserving of our profound gratitude and admiration; Dr. |
|
Guerra has served South Texas ISD with dedication and vision, and |
|
her contributions have greatly benefited not only area |
|
schoolchildren but the community as a whole; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Marla M. Guerra, |
|
superintendent of South Texas ISD, on earning the 2009 Texas |
|
Excellence in Education Award from AdvancED and extend to her |
|
sincere best wishes for continued success with her important work; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Dr. Guerra as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
