R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Proud residents of Olney are coming together on May
  2, 2009, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of
  this unique Texas community; and
         WHEREAS, The area was first settled in 1879 and 1880 by
  cattlemen Boone McCarty, L. Pankonon, and the Neely brothers, who
  used the site for their annual roundups; a store was established in
  1889 and a school in 1891; and
         WHEREAS, Olney was incorporated in 1909 with the arrival of
  the Wichita Falls and Southern Railway; the town was moved a mile
  north to get closer to the line, and in 1910, service began with the
  Gulf, Texas and Western railroad; and
         WHEREAS, In 1923, oil was discovered in the area, and Olney
  became a lively boomtown; today, it continues to be a center for
  petroleum production and for agribusiness, and it is also home to
  Air Tractor, a leading manufacturer of agricultural aircraft; and
         WHEREAS, Proud of its record number of Eagle Scouts at one
  time, Olney has also been voted a Blue Ribbon City; in addition, it
  is the host of the One Arm Dove Hunt, a unique annual event for
  individuals who have lost the use of an arm or hand, and that also
  features pool and golf tournaments and skeet shoots; and
         WHEREAS, Celebrating their colorful history as they work to
  build a bright future, the citizens of Olney may take great pride in
  the contribution their community has made to the heritage of the
  Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the centennial of the incorporation
  of Olney and extend to its citizens sincere best wishes for an
  enjoyable and meaningful anniversary event.
