R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The city of Fort Worth lost an esteemed spiritual
  and civic leader with the passing of the Reverend Dr. Cedric Deon
  Britt of Mount Gilead Baptist Church on March 13, 2009, at the age
  of 56; and
         WHEREAS, Born on August 29, 1952, to Samuel and Willie Pearl
  Chambers Britt in Dallas, Cedric Britt graduated from Lincoln High
  School and discovered his calling to the ministry at the age of 17;
  he served as pastor of Koinonia Baptist Church in Indiana for four
  years and came to Fort Worth in 1979 to preach at historic Mount
  Gilead; his inspired work in leading the church made him one of the
  most respected ministers in the area, and he was renowned for his
  intellect and his masterful skill as an orator; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Britt earned his bachelor's degree at Bishop
  College and graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological
  Seminary; he was the recipient of an honorary doctorate of divinity
  and studied at Regent's Park College at the University of Oxford;
  and
         WHEREAS, This influential pastor involved himself locally
  with numerous community and religious organizations, including the
  Baptist Ministers Union, the Interdenominational Ministers
  Alliance of Fort Worth, and the Citizens and Minority Business
  Leaders of Tarrant County, and he served as president of the Fort
  Worth chapter of People United to Save Humanity; at the regional and
  national levels, Dr. Britt served as a member of the board for the
  National Baptist Congress of Christian Workers and for Rotary
  International, and he associated himself in various capacities with
  the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, the
  Progressive National Baptist Convention, USA, and the Southern
  Baptist Convention; for the past 13 years, he preached at the
  National Baptist Convention of America, and he was life member of
  the NAACP; and
         WHEREAS, A dedicated family man, Dr. Britt enjoyed the love
  and support of his wife, the former Joyce Hall, in all of his
  endeavors; the couple shared 31 rewarding years of marriage and
  became the parents of two children, Karen Britt and Cedric Deon
  Britt, Jr., who preceded his father in death; and
         WHEREAS, The Reverend Cedric Britt dedicated his life to his
  faith and his family, and he leaves behind a legacy that will
  continue to inspire all those who were privileged to know him; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of the Reverend Dr.
  Cedric Deon Britt and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
  family: to his wife, Joyce Britt; to his daughter, Karen Alexandria
  Britt; to his mother, Willie Pearl Britt; to his brother, Samuel C.
  Britt; to his mother-in-law, Margie Hall; and to his other
  relatives and many friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Reverend
  Britt.
