H.R. No. 1295

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On Memorial Day 2009, area residents are gathering
at the Georgetown--Williamson County Veterans Memorial in Sun City
to solemnly honor all the men and women who have served, or who are
presently serving, in the United States Armed Forces; and
WHEREAS, The toll of war has been a heavy one: altogether,
more than a half-million U.S. military personnel have died in
battle, and approximately 1.5 million have been wounded; thousands
more have endured extreme privation as prisoners of war, and still
other thousands have been accounted as missing in action; and
WHEREAS, In communities across the country, citizens have
erected monuments as a tangible tribute to those who have dared all
in defiance of tyranny and in their country's defense; the majestic
memorial plaza in Sun City recognizes those who have served in the
nation's armed forces and honors the nearly 170 service members
from Williamson County who have given their lives in combat from
World War I to the present; and
WHEREAS, This year, the memorial tablets listing those killed
in action bear two new names, those of U.S. Army Specialist Matthew
  T. Morris of Cedar Park and U.S. Marine First Lieutenant Matthew R.
Vandegrift, a graduate of Leander High School; both of these
outstanding young men were mortally wounded while conducting
  operations in Iraq; and
WHEREAS, With U.S. troops today engaged in difficult
operations overseas, endeavoring to secure peace and stability in
dangerous environments, Memorial Day ceremonies resonate with
fresh meaning for American citizens, and it is a privilege to join
with the residents of Williamson County in paying homage to the
immeasurable courage, commitment, and sacrifice of this country's
military personnel; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate the 2009 Memorial Day observance
sponsored by the Sun City Texas Community Association and extend to
all those associated with that special event sincere appreciation
for their strong support of this country's servicemen and
  servicewomen; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the Sun City Texas Community Association as an
expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
