R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Residents of Hawkins lost a beloved neighbor and
  admired community leader with the death of the Honorable Wilburn
  Carrol Maynard on May 11, 2008; and
         WHEREAS, A native of Madisonville, W. C. Maynard attended
  Howard Payne University and The University of Texas at Austin
  before going to work for Exxon Mobil; he served his country during
  World War II as an identification specialist at the Brown Shipyard
  in Houston, where he met his future wife, Estelle Smith; the couple
  were blessed with three children, Jane, Jimmy, and Lea, and enjoyed
  58 years together until Mrs. Maynard's passing; and
         WHEREAS, During his career at Exxon Mobil, Mr. Maynard worked
  in labs in Katy, Overton, Pickton, and Hawkins; after retiring as a
  plant foreman, he went on to distinguish himself as a dedicated
  public leader, serving as a member of the Hawkins Independent
  School District Board of Trustees for 14 years, as a member of the
  Hawkins City Council, and as mayor for 12 years; especially
  committed to education issues, he also served as a board member of
  Region VII Education Service Center for more than 20 years,
  including five as president; and
         WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan was a 32nd degree Mason who was
  recognized for 60 years of Mason membership; in addition, he was
  active at First Baptist Church in Hawkins for nearly four decades
  and served his fellow congregants as a deacon; and
         WHEREAS, Highly regarded for his contributions to Hawkins and
  East Texas, W. C. Maynard leaves behind a legacy of civic service
  that will long be remembered by all who were privileged to share in
  the richness of his life; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Wilburn Carrol
  Maynard and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to
  his children, Jane Maynard, Jimmy Maynard, and Lea Sherman; and to
  his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of W. C.
  Maynard.
