R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, A number of proud Texans are visiting Austin on |
|
|
April 23, 2009, to celebrate University of Dallas Day at the State |
|
|
Capitol; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Founded in 1956 as a Catholic, coeducational, |
|
|
liberal arts institution, the University of Dallas emphasizes |
|
|
rigorous scholarship and a deep commitment to spiritual and ethical |
|
|
values, hallmarks of the Catholic intellectual tradition; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The University of Dallas is nationally recognized |
|
|
for its academic excellence; more than 90 percent of its faculty |
|
|
hold a doctorate or the highest degree in their field, and the |
|
|
school was one of the youngest in the 20th century to be granted a |
|
|
Phi Beta Kappa chapter; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In 2008, the university enrolled approximately |
|
|
1,300 undergraduates, a record number, and more than 1,600 graduate |
|
|
students; its freshman class boasts the third-best SAT scores among |
|
|
incoming first-year students in Texas, and the academic profile of |
|
|
its entering class matches the highest such profile in the school's |
|
|
history to date; the university's academic eminence is also |
|
|
reflected in its large number of National Merit Scholars and |
|
|
Fulbright award recipients; students at the university come from |
|
|
virtually every state and from numerous countries around the world; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In addition to its strong undergraduate programs, |
|
|
the University of Dallas offers graduate and professional education |
|
|
through the Graduate School of Management, the School of Ministry, |
|
|
and the Braniff Graduate School of Liberal Arts; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The MBA program at the university ranks first in the |
|
|
Southwest in the number of students enrolled, and the Harvard |
|
|
Business Review has both praised the university's College of |
|
|
Business as an exemplar of best practices and recognized it as one |
|
|
of four business schools in the country that have retained their |
|
|
professional focus; the School of Ministry is the fastest-growing |
|
|
graduate ministerial school in the United States, and the Catholic |
|
|
Biblical School, within the School of Ministry, is the largest |
|
|
program of its kind among all Catholic universities in the country; |
|
|
the University of Dallas also has the distinction of offering the |
|
|
only liberal arts Ph.D. in the nation with a core curriculum in the |
|
|
great books; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Along with its main campus in Irving, the University |
|
|
of Dallas maintains teaching facilities in Frisco and North |
|
|
Richland Hills, and for more than 35 years it has operated a campus |
|
|
near Rome, Italy; nearly 80 percent of all undergraduates at the |
|
|
university spend a semester at the Rome campus, and during the |
|
|
summer, the campus hosts a School of Ministry program for graduate |
|
|
students; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Since first opening its doors just over five decades |
|
|
ago, the University of Dallas has more than fulfilled the dreams of |
|
|
its founders, and it is a privilege to recognize its myriad |
|
|
achievements and the extraordinary promise of the years ahead; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby recognize April 23, 2009, as University of |
|
|
Dallas Day at the State Capitol and extend to all those present in |
|
|
the chamber today sincere best wishes for an enjoyable and |
|
|
memorable visit; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for the University of Dallas as an expression of high |
|
|
regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
