R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The boys' varsity basketball team from the Sam |
|
|
Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center in Houston capped a |
|
|
successful 2008-2009 season by qualifying for the University |
|
|
Interscholastic League 5A playoffs; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This exciting achievement was made all the more |
|
|
notable in that it coincided with the school's inaugural year of |
|
|
implementing its new educational focus on math, science, and |
|
|
technology; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Head coach Demarcus Peterson provided sound |
|
|
guidance to his players and helped them to meet the challenges of a |
|
|
demanding season; under his direction, the team battled its way to a |
|
|
fourth place finish in District 20, thereby earning its playoff |
|
|
berth; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Winning with a true team effort, the Tigers received |
|
|
important contributions from the entire roster, and each player |
|
|
deserves recognition for outstanding play and exemplary |
|
|
dedication; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Leading the Sam Houston attack were three |
|
|
individuals who earned all-district honors; guard Arthur Smith |
|
|
averaged 21 points per game, was the sixth leading scorer in the |
|
|
Houston area, and made the all-district first team, while point |
|
|
guard Brian Elphage averaged 11 points and 7 assists per game and |
|
|
was a second team all-district selection; moreover, forward |
|
|
Marquise Christian led the Houston area in blocked shots and |
|
|
rebounds and averaged 14 points a game, and he was named to the |
|
|
all-district second team; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Though they ultimately fell to Kingwood High School |
|
|
in the postseason, the Tigers may reflect proudly on a memorable |
|
|
2008-2009 campaign; over the course of the year, the team developed |
|
|
into a mature and accomplished group of athletes, and the lessons |
|
|
they learned about teamwork and determination will serve them well |
|
|
in the years ahead; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate the boys' varsity basketball team |
|
|
from the Sam Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center on |
|
|
qualifying for the UIL 5A playoffs and extend to the players, |
|
|
coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, |
|
|
be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
|
House of Representatives. |
