R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The community organization La Mujer Obrera is
  working to create jobs and sustainable economic opportunity for
  low-income women workers in El Paso with its ambitious Centro
  Mayapan Festival Marketplace project; and
         WHEREAS, Founded in 1981, La Mujer Obrera is dedicated to
  fostering empowerment and employment with dignity for women of
  Mexican heritage and their families; it is also working to
  revitalize South Central El Paso by providing basic skills and
  vocational experience for women and helping them navigate the
  requirements for employment and the development of small
  businesses; and
         WHEREAS, Anchoring this effort is Centro Mayapan, a unique
  festival marketplace housed in a renovated 40,000-square-foot
  warehouse and encompassing a wide range of businesses, community
  services, and cultural opportunities; and
         WHEREAS, The center's Mercado Mayapan will be a vibrant
  indoor space for food vendors, artisans, and other
  microenterprises; a vital center for Mexican culture, Plaza
  Cultural will specialize in performances and exhibitions by
  dancers, musicians, and artists from both sides of the border,
  while the Museo Mayachen will feature permanent exhibits about the
  heritage and struggle of Mexican immigrant women garment workers
  and farmworkers; and
         WHEREAS, Centro Mayapan will also include a media and
  technology center, where women can take classes in journalism and
  the use of computers, and the Center for Bilingual Development and
  Social Enterprise, where instruction in leadership development,
  civic engagement, and entrepreneurship will be offered; and
         WHEREAS, Planned to open in 2009, Centro Mayapan will
  encourage economic and cultural development, generating jobs,
  business growth, and community investment, and the women of La
  Mujer Obrera may indeed take great pride in the scope and ambition
  of this inspiring project; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate La Mujer Obrera for the development
  of Centro Mayapan Festival Marketplace and extend to the
  organization's members and supporters sincere best wishes for
  continuing achievement; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for La Mujer Obrera as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
