R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Jennifer Atkinson of Metz Elementary School in
  Austin was selected as a finalist in the H-E-B Excellence in
  Education Awards on April 7, 2009; and
         WHEREAS, Created to celebrate the contributions of public
  school professionals, the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards
  program is the largest monetary recognition initiative for
  educators in Texas and one of the largest in the nation; as a
  finalist, Ms. Atkinson receives a $1,000 cash award and $1,000 for
  her school, and she becomes eligible for grand prizes that range
  from $5,000 to $25,000; a total of $500,000 in prizes will
  ultimately be awarded to schools and teachers as part of the
  program; and
         WHEREAS, A veteran educator with more than 10 years of
  experience teaching first-grade students, Ms. Atkinson is one of
  just 40 Texas teachers and administrators named as finalists; she
  has also been awarded a number of other accolades in her career,
  including the Time Warner Cable National Teacher of the Year Award,
  a $10,000 classroom makeover from Got 2B Safe!, and the James F.
  Veninga Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award; and
         WHEREAS, The Lone Star State depends on outstanding teachers
  to prepare its young citizens for the challenges and opportunities
  of the future, and Jennifer Atkinson's notable contributions to
  that worthy goal are duly recognized with this prestigious honor;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Jennifer Atkinson on her selection
  as a finalist in the 2009 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards and
  extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Atkinson as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
