R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Professor Ruth Pitts of McLennan Community College
  in Waco was named a Piper Professor for 2008 by the Minnie Stevens
  Piper Foundation; and
         WHEREAS, Since 1958, the Piper Professor Program has
  recognized superior teaching at the college level by annually
  awarding $5,000 each to 15 Texas educators; teachers are singled
  out for their dedication to their profession and for the special
  impact they have made in the lives of their students; and
         WHEREAS, Ruth Pitts received her bachelor's degree in music
  education from Baylor University, and she went on to earn a master's
  degree and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University; she has been an
  active member of the Music Teachers National Association for 30
  years, and she has served as president of the Texas Music Teachers
  Association; and
         WHEREAS, A teacher for more than 35 years, Dr. Pitts has
  taught since 1977 at MCC, where she is currently an instructor of
  transfer music; she has inspired her students and earned the
  respect and admiration of her colleagues with her skill, knowledge,
  and enthusiasm; and
         WHEREAS, The students of the Lone Star State benefit greatly
  from the dedication of committed teachers like Dr. Pitts, and this
  prestigious award provides a fitting recognition for a truly
  outstanding educator; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Ruth Pitts for being named a Piper
  Professor of 2008 and extend to her sincere best wishes for
  continued success and happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Dr. Pitts as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
