R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Musician and entrepreneur Art Greenhaw has become a
  catalyst for civic improvement in his hometown of Mesquite through
  his dedication to the arts and to the city's cultural heritage; and
         WHEREAS, In 1993, Mr. Greenhaw joined the Light Crust
  Doughboys, the western swing band that launched the career of Bob
  Wills in the early 1930s; the group has counted many of the finest
  musicians in Texas among its members, and after becoming part of
  that long history, Mr. Greenhaw helped engineer a renaissance; the
  Doughboys won new fans by recording with gospel legend James
  Blackwood and performing with the Fort Worth Symphony, the Lone
  Star Ballet in Amarillo, the Dallas Wind Symphony, and the Abilene
  Philharmonic, among others; following the death of banjo virtuoso
  and arranger Marvin "Smokey" Montgomery in 2001, Mr. Greenhaw
  assumed leadership of the group; and
         WHEREAS, The Doughboys have received numerous Grammy
  nominations and won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Southern,
  Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album for their work on We Called Him
  Mr. Gospel Music - The James Blackwood Tribute Album, released on
  Mr. Greenhaw's independent, Mesquite-based record label; the band
  has been inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, the Rockabilly
  Hall of Fame, and the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, and recent
  accolades include the 2007 Will Rogers Award for Western Swing
  Group of the Year from the Academy of Western Artists; in 2008, the
  group was one of 12 entities selected by the Texas Commission on the
  Arts to receive a subsidy through the National Endowment for the
  Arts American Masterpieces initiative; Mr. Greenhaw, a graduate of
  Southern Methodist University and a gifted instrumentalist,
  singer, and songwriter, has also worked as a producer and arranger
  for the Ventures, Ann-Margret, Engelbert Humperdinck, Trini Lopez,
  the Jordanaires, and others; and
         WHEREAS, This dynamic Texan has helped preserve the flavor of
  Mesquite's historic downtown through his stewardship of the
  McWhorter-Greenhaw building, where his grandfather started a
  hardware and farm supply store in 1943 and where Mr. Greenhaw now
  teaches his music students; recently, he has become a leader in the
  effort to revitalize the city's Heritage Square as an arts and
  entertainment destination; in February 2009, he initiated the Music
  in Old Town series, performing a free concert with sitar recording
  artist Vatsal Dave to bring residents back to this once-bustling
  community center and gain support for renovations; and
         WHEREAS, Art Greenhaw has worked to bring wide recognition to
  the city of Mesquite through his many endeavors, and his
  achievements in behalf of the historic town square have earned the
  gratitude and admiration of his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be
  it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby commend Art Greenhaw for his contributions to
  the arts in Mesquite and for his commitment to his hometown and
  extend to him best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Greenhaw as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
