R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Proud residents of Jarrell celebrated their city's
  100th anniversary on April 11, 2009; and
         WHEREAS, Jarrell was platted in 1909 at the junction of an old
  stagecoach line and the anticipated route of the Bartlett and
  Western Railway; the new town grew quickly and reached a population
  of 500 by 1914, when it boasted electric lights, a waterworks, a
  hotel, and a movie theater; and
         WHEREAS, For most of the 1900s, Jarrell remained an
  agricultural community; the loss of rail service in 1935 and the
  decline of the cotton industry in the 1920s and 1930s removed much
  of the impetus for its growth, and the town settled into a quiet
  routine that lasted until the final decade of the 20th century; and
         WHEREAS, Since 1990, Jarrell's population has risen
  dramatically, and given its access to major transportation
  arteries, as well as its proximity to Austin, continued expansion
  is predicted for a number of years to come; and
         WHEREAS, Incorporated in 2001, Jarrell now enjoys a
  diversified economy, with enterprises ranging from light
  manufacturing to retail to quarrying; the outstanding quality of
  its schools serves as an additional attraction for families and
  businesses looking to relocate; and
         WHEREAS, At the heart of this thriving town is an indomitable
  community spirit; Jarrell was struck on May 27, 1997, by a
  devastating tornado that killed nearly 30 people; in the aftermath
  of the storm, a tenacious town rebuilt with the help of numerous
  local volunteers; that same spirit of mutual support today sustains
  a host of worthy civic endeavors; and
         WHEREAS, At this special milestone, as the citizens of
  Jarrell pause to reflect and celebrate, it is most fitting to
  recognize their industry, their accomplishments, and their
  unshakable determination; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
  founding of Jarrell and extend to all who call this city home
  sincere best wishes for a bright and prosperous future.
