R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The people of El Paso lost a beloved member of the |
|
community with the death of Maria Sixta Esquivel on October 10, |
|
2007; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born to Juan Esquivel Martinez and Julia Orijinales |
|
Castro on August 6, 1939, Maria Esquivel grew up in Ejido Nuevo |
|
Leon, Coahuila, Mexico; in 1963, she became the attendant of El Paso |
|
resident Paul Moreno, who was elected to the Texas House of |
|
Representatives in 1966, and she remained by his side for more than |
|
four decades, during which time she met numerous public officials, |
|
including then governor George W. Bush; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Esquivel excelled at her myriad duties, |
|
including overseeing the Moreno household, managing functions and |
|
parties, and assisting Representative Moreno with any number of |
|
tasks; she traveled with him on business trips throughout the |
|
United States, Mexico, and Canada and relocated with him to Austin |
|
during legislative sessions; she was the only staffer allowed on |
|
the house floor, and her assistance was integral to his many |
|
efforts; when his workload increased as a member of the |
|
appropriations committee in 2001, she was up before dawn to help |
|
ready him for morning meetings and was invariably still completing |
|
projects long into the night; and |
|
WHEREAS, The loving attention of Ms. Esquivel further |
|
benefited Representative Moreno's daughter, Annette M. Alvarado, |
|
whom she played a significant role in raising; through the years, |
|
she also came to hold a special place in the hearts of Ms. |
|
Alvarado's daughters, Innette, Evette, and Amarette; she was known |
|
affectionately to Ms. Alvarado and her girls as "Nina," while she |
|
referred to them as "las cuatro petochitas"; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dedicated to her avocation, Ms. Esquivel took |
|
seriously her part in Representative Moreno's ability to accomplish |
|
good in behalf of his constituents; she was invested in not only the |
|
care of her employer, but also the betterment of El Paso and the |
|
Lone Star State, and she earned the respect and admiration of |
|
political activists throughout the city; and |
|
WHEREAS, Maria Esquivel made a meaningful difference in the |
|
lives of many, and although she is deeply missed, memories of her |
|
will forever be treasured by all those who held her dear; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Maria Sixta Esquivel |
|
and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her |
|
sisters, Josefa and Porfiria Esquivel Orijinales; to her brothers, |
|
Zeferino, Margarito, Natalio, and Ignacio Esquivel Orijinales; to |
|
her close friend and employer, former state representative Paul |
|
Moreno, and his daughter and granddaughters, Annette M. Alvarado, |
|
and Innette, Evette, and Amarette; and to her other relatives and |
|
friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Maria Sixta |
|
Esquivel. |
