R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, For more than half a century, General Motors has
  played a significant role in the Texas economy, generating
  thousands of jobs, and during that period, the industrious workers
  of the Arlington Assembly Plant have contributed greatly to the
  economic health and development of their community; and
         WHEREAS, General Motors currently employs more than 5,500
  Texans throughout the state, generating a payroll in excess of $500
  million a year; these hardworking men and women have produced 7.5
  million GM vehicles, more than any other automobile manufacturer in
  the state; and
         WHEREAS, First opened in 1954, the 250-acre GM Arlington
  Assembly Plant was originally designed to assemble aircraft and
  automobiles; over the years, the facility has produced a number of
  popular GM models, and it currently manufactures the Cadillac
  Escalade; and
         WHEREAS, The factory has also been an important part of the
  community in Arlington, employing many area Texans and providing
  valuable property tax revenue; moreover, its employees have
  generously supported such local charities as the United Way and
  Toys for Kids; and
         WHEREAS, The Arlington Assembly Plant is notable as well for
  its environmental stewardship; in 2000, the plant was part of the
  State of Texas Clean Industries program, and it has received
  several consecutive annual awards for pretreatment excellence for
  water discharged to the city of Arlington; in 2003, the plant earned
  the Certificate of Achievement from the Green Lights Partnership of
  the Environmental Protection Agency, and it received EPA Energy
  Star awards for energy conservation in 2003 and 2004; and
         WHEREAS, General Motors and the Arlington Assembly Plant have
  long been, and continue to be, valuable members of the Texas
  business community, and it is a pleasure to recognize the company's
  commitment to the Lone Star State and to pay tribute as well to the
  plant's dedicated employees; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby honor the contributions of General Motors and
  the Arlington Assembly Plant to the State of Texas and extend to the
  company's management and employees sincere best wishes for the
  future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the plant as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
