R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Jean Ann Ables-Flatt of Terrell has received a Best
  of East Texas Award from a Lufkin-based publishing company for her
  outstanding contributions toward the preservation of Kaufman
  County history; and
         WHEREAS, Bob Bowman, co-owner of Best of East Texas
  Publishers, presented the award to Mrs. Ables-Flatt on April 7,
  2009, during a meeting of the Terrell City Council; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Ables-Flatt has been involved for more than two
  decades in recovering, recording, and promoting local history, and
  while pursuing those interests she has worked with a number of area
  organizations; she is the longtime chair of the Kaufman County
  Historical Commission, which under her leadership has won a
  Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Historical Commission
  every year since 1995; in addition, she has served as director and
  president of the Terrell Heritage Society (THS) and as historian
  for First United Methodist Church; and
         WHEREAS, The author of several booklets about local history
  and of a regular feature in the THS newsletter, Mrs. Ables-Flatt has
  also written and produced a play about a notable incident in the
  city's past, and her theatrical flair helps her to make history come
  alive for children when she portrays various historical figures for
  them, dressed in period costumes; other avenues for sharing her
  knowledge and enthusiasm include volunteering her skills as a
  certified genealogical records specialist at the Riter C. Hulsey
  Public Library, helping residents to trace the history of their
  homes, and leading historic driving tours of the city; and
         WHEREAS, In recognition of her tireless commitment, a special
  day was proclaimed in her honor in 1996, and she was appointed in
  1999 to a six-year term on the Texas Historical Commission; and
         WHEREAS, Jean Ann Ables-Flatt has devoted untold hours to
  researching and preserving the history of a special corner of the
  Lone Star State, and through her exceptional efforts, countless
  citizens have gained a richer appreciation of their heritage; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Jean Ann Ables-Flatt on her receipt
  of a Best of East Texas Award from Best of East Texas Publishers and
  extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success in all her
  endeavors; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mrs. Ables-Flatt as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
