R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The Mid-Valley Campus of South Texas College
  commemorated the 15th anniversary of the school's founding on March
  25, 2009; and
         WHEREAS, Established in 1993 to serve the residents of Starr
  and Hidalgo Counties, South Texas College offers more than 100
  degree and certificate programs, including two bachelor's degrees
  in applied technology, to approximately 20,000 students across its
  five campuses; according to Community College Week, STC ranks in
  the top 100 community colleges in the country for awarding
  associate degrees, and it was ranked third in the nation for its
  enrollment of Hispanic students by Hispanic Outlook Magazine;
  moreover, it received the Community College Excellence Award from
  the MetLife Foundation in 2008; and
         WHEREAS, STC's Mid-Valley Campus opened in 1997, with the
  support of the Weslaco Economic Development Corporation; today,
  nearly 3,500 students from Weslaco, Donna, Mercedes, and other
  surrounding communities attend the Mid-Valley Campus each
  semester; in addition to promoting job creation and providing vital
  opportunities for higher education in the Mid-Valley area, this
  campus is the site for STC's Dual Enrollment Engineering Academy,
  Garden Project, and Border Studies Club, and it is the base for the
  region's annual Walk for Education; and
         WHEREAS, With high-quality educational and workforce
  programs, South Texas College is helping area Texans build a bright
  future for themselves, and in so doing this notable institution is
  contributing to the economic prosperity of the region; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 15th anniversary of South Texas
  College and extend to all those affiliated with STC's Mid-Valley
  Campus sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the campus as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
