WHEREAS, A 50th high school reunion is truly cause for
celebration, and the members of the Class of 1959 from Jack Yates
High School in Houston are marking this significant milestone from
  June 5 to June 14, 2009; and
WHEREAS, This noteworthy group has the distinction of being
the first class to graduate from the newly built Jack Yates High
School in Houston's Third Ward neighborhood; they were also members
of the last generation to complete all 12 years of their education
in segregated schools; as they gather to pay tribute to their alma
mater, they will surely enjoy sharing stories and recalling fond
memories of such events as the Thanksgiving Day Homecoming Game,
when more than 30,000 cheering fans witnessed the reigning "Miss
Jack Yates," Carolyn Wilkins Greene, and her court land in a
  helicopter at Jeppenson Stadium; and
WHEREAS, Led by their president, Billie Victor Brown, the
members of the Class of 1959 will also recount for one another their
experiences from the years that have passed since their days
together at Jack Yates High, and as they reflect on the trials and
triumphs of the past half-century, there will no doubt be much
laughter and even the occasional tear; and
WHEREAS, With the support of their parents, teachers, and
administrators, these esteemed Texans have gone on to become valued
members of their communities and to make their mark on the world in
a wide range of callings, and their participation in this special
reunion demonstrates their appreciation of the deep and abiding
influence their alma mater has had in shaping their lives; thus,
they are also coming together to raise funds for scholarships to be
awarded to the next generation of graduating seniors from Jack
  Yates High School; and
WHEREAS, The reunion's enjoyable activities will include
many highlights, but its real value is found in the lasting bonds
between friends of many decades' standing, and it is indeed a
pleasure to recognize their loyalty to one another and to their
beloved school; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate the members of the Jack Yates High
School Class of 1959 on the occasion of their 50th high school
reunion and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued
  happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the class as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
