R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Bobby Trimble of Midland has devoted much of his |
|
life to developing, implementing, and expanding the organization |
|
Christmas in Action; and |
|
WHEREAS, A volunteer program, Christmas in Action aims to |
|
improve the lives of less fortunate members of the community; Mr. |
|
Trimble conceived of the program during a Sunday school lesson on |
|
the social responsibilities of people of faith; taking this |
|
teaching to heart, he organized a group of like-minded citizens and |
|
began Christmas In April (CIA); under his able leadership, people |
|
began donating their time, resources, and labor to make small |
|
repairs to the homes of the elderly and disabled in Midland; and |
|
WHEREAS, Enthusiasm and interest in the program grew, and in |
|
May of 1976, Mr. Trimble helped to establish a formal organization |
|
by creating a CIA board of directors and becoming its first |
|
president; as word of CIA's good work spread, he was called upon, |
|
and graciously assented, to help other communities across the state |
|
and nation start similar programs; and |
|
WHEREAS, In addition to its efforts to maintain and improve |
|
individual residences, CIA accepted responsibility for building a |
|
HUD apartment complex to house low-income elderly; Langtry Village |
|
was completed in May 1986, and Mr. Trimble continues to serve as its |
|
president; and |
|
WHEREAS, His concept of assisting a vulnerable segment of |
|
local society has grown tremendously since its humble beginnings; |
|
rechristened Christmas in Action in 2001, the program has repaired |
|
more than 8,000 homes, and more than 47,000 volunteers have given |
|
their time and energy to help the elderly and disabled in the |
|
community; for his efforts, Mr. Trimble received the Governor's |
|
Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in 1981, and the |
|
President's Volunteer Action Award in April 1982; and |
|
WHEREAS, The mission of Christmas in Action has remained |
|
unchanged since first articulated by Mr. Trimble: those who are |
|
able have a duty to help those who are unable to help themselves; |
|
despite nearing 80 years of age, Bobby Trimble continues to set an |
|
example of service and commitment, devoting his hard labor and |
|
considerable organizational talents so that others may live in |
|
safety, warmth, and independence; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commend Bobby Trimble on his efforts with |
|
Christmas in Action and extend to him sincere best wishes for |
|
continued success with his important work; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Trimble as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
