R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Residents of Alpine lost an admired neighbor and
  friend with the death of Martha Floro on April 8, 2009, at the age of
  88; and
         WHEREAS, Born on June 27, 1920, to John and Ruby Davis Ford in
  Missouri, the former Martha Josephine Ford grew up on the family
  farm and graduated from high school in Odessa, Missouri; she met her
  husband, George Floro, while earning a junior college degree at
  Graceland College in Iowa, and the couple went on to enjoy 65
  rewarding years of marriage and raise two children, Charles and
  Beverly; with the passing years, the family grew to include seven
  grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and
         WHEREAS, The Floros resided in several different locations
  across the country as Mr. Floro pursued his education; while living
  in Louisiana, Mrs. Floro earned her bachelor's degree in journalism
  at Louisiana State University, and when the family moved to Guam in
  1962, she edited a civil service newspaper for U.S. Navy personnel;
  following the family's return stateside, Mrs. Floro served as a
  social service worker in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, a job she held until
  her retirement in 1982; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Floro chose to relocate to Alpine after
  retiring, and Mrs. Floro took an active role in the community,
  working with the West Texas Democratic Women and the Sierra Club and
  joining in fellowship with other members of the Religious Society
  of Friends; an avid and gifted writer, she taught creative writing
  at the Sunshine House, and her work has appeared in a number of
  local and regional publications; she also took part in quilting and
  singing groups at the Sunshine House, sold goat cheese at the local
  farmers' market, helped found Big Bend Recyclers and Big Bend
  People & Goats, and enjoyed birdwatching and photography; and
         WHEREAS, Martha Floro led a long and generous life filled
  with meaningful contributions to her family and to the many
  communities where she lived, and she will be fondly remembered and
  greatly missed by all those who held her dear; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Martha Floro and
  extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her
  husband, George Floro; to her children, Chuck Floro and his wife,
  Debbie, and Beverly Seidlicki; to her grandchildren, Ezekiel Floro
  and his wife, Alesia, Angela Pommer and her husband, Kelly, Sarah,
  Katie, and Christy Floro, and Carissa and Danica Topham; to her
  great-grandchildren, William, Daniel, and Nadine Floro and David
  Pommer; and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Martha
  Floro.
