R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Respected attorney and community leader DeMetris
  Sampson is being deservedly honored as part of the 16th annual Women
  of Spirit Awards Celebration presented by the American Jewish
  Congress on May 14, 2009; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Sampson holds legal degrees from The University
  of Texas at Austin School of Law and Southern Methodist University
  Dedman School of Law, and she has been a practicing lawyer since
  1980; a pioneering figure among attorneys in North Texas, she was
  the first African American woman to become a partner in a majority
  firm in Dallas and has practiced with Linebarger Goggan Blair &
  Sampson since 1987, presently holding the title of managing
  partner; she also distinguished herself in her work with the San
  Antonio City Attorney's Office, the Dallas County District
  Attorney's Office, and the Committee on Judicial Affairs for the
  Texas House of Representatives; and
         WHEREAS, Dedicated to improving the world around her, Ms.
  Sampson has devoted her time and talents to a long list of
  organizations and initiatives; in addition to serving on the board
  of the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce, she has chaired a number
  of successful school and city bond campaigns and has been a member
  of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Board and the East Texas State
  University Board of Regents; moreover, her leadership has benefited
  many task forces and committees addressing a wide range of
  important issues; and
         WHEREAS, This admired individual has received numerous
  awards for her efforts; these include the Dr. Martin Luther King,
  Jr., Justice Award, the Maura Award from the Women's Center of
  Dallas, the President's Award from the Dallas Urban League, and the
  Unsung Hero Award from the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses; and
         WHEREAS, The Women of Spirit Award provides further
  recognition of the exceptional professional and civic achievements
  realized by DeMetris Sampson, whose legacy of service to her fellow
  citizens is indeed worthy of celebration; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate DeMetris Sampson on her receipt of
  a 2009 Women of Spirit Award and extend to her sincere best wishes
  for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Sampson as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
